Ten Additional Medicare Subsidised Psychological Sessions

The government has just announced that ten additional Medicare subsidised psychological sessions will be available to people subjected to the most recent COVID-19 restrictions in areas of Australia that have been impacted by the second wave of the virus.

With the mental health of individuals throughout Australia, and particularly Victoria, being hit hard by the COVID-19 restrictions, the government has placed mental health care and suicide prevention at a high priority. This new scheme is their current solution to this difficult problem.

This announcement means that people who have used up all of their ten sessions can now access an additional ten psychological therapy sessions—providing that your original Mental Health Care Plan from your GP is dated on or after the 1st July 2020. Therefore, they can continue to receive mental health care from psychologist, psychiatrist, GP or other eligible allied health workers.

Who is eligible for the additional services?

To be eligible for the ten extra sessions, individuals must be subject to public health orders restricting their movement within the state or territory, issued at any time from the 1st of July 2020 to the 31st of March 2021, and to people who are required to isolate or quarantine under public health orders. They are also required to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a review with their GP.

What is the Time Frame?

The changes began on the 7th of August 2020 and will continue until the 31st of March 2021. However, to keep up to date on this new mental health support scheme, we recommend you keep an eye on the Department of Health website Here.

Telehealth & Face to Face Services

These sessions will be available primarily through Telehealth services, while social distancing restrictions are in place. However, as an essential service, we are available for Face to Face appointments making sure all clients needs are met.  We encourage Telehealth appointments during this time as it allows our clients to receive the support they need from the safety of their own home and ensuring the best protection for all during these unprecedented times of social isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Don’t Be Afraid to Reach out for Support

If you are struggling with your mental health amid the COVID-19 crisis, understand that what you are feeling is extremely normal, and there is no shame in seeking support. These times of social isolation and increased job insecurity are tugging at the mental health of everyone, and we urge you to reach out for help if you require it. Even just having someone to speak to about your feelings without fear of judgement can make you feel remarkably better.
