There’s nothing to prepare for on your way to your first session, unless you want to prepare for it. Psychologists work by conversing with you, which means your first session will be about you being supported to describe the problem(s) you’re facing and how it led to you seeking psychological counselling and support.
If you’re having a hard time opening up, they can start engaging with you through questions such as: “What brings you here today?” or “How did you think the problem started?”
Everyone has different problems, and as such everyone will have different ranges of counselling sessions. These depend on the circumstances surrounding your reason for counselling in the first place. Sometimes, some people come for a few sessions, while others come on a regular basis. You’re in fact free to stop attending these sessions just as you’re free to resume them at any point in the future. It’s always a good idea to talk your intentions of ceasing any type of treatment with your treatment provider so you can get the most out of your time with them.
