If you ask someone what they’re afraid of, it’s very likely you’d think the answer they’ll give is their “phobia.” As such, if you’re “afraid of ghosts,” you have a “phobia” on ghosts. However, having a phobia is more than just being afraid of something. Phobias are in fact an extremely common type of anxiety disorder. In its most basic sense, a phobia is “unreasonable anxiety and fear” on a specific situation or object that causes a person to completely avoid them.
Some studies consider a phobia as the most “common” type of mental concern someone would have. “Social phobia,” for instance, is an extremely common type of anxiety disorder. When left unmanaged, the effects of such a phobia – along with its other counterparts – can be annoying and minor, to debilitating and severe.
A person with a phobia will have a tendency to try to avoid the object that is causing the phobia. For instance, a phobia on snakes would make someone compelled to avoid situations with snakes. Unfortunately, when left unmanaged, a person with a snake phobia may decide never to visit zoos or go out camping again. This is when a phobia can start becoming negative for a person, especially when the phobia in question is something we have to experience from time to time, such as interacting with strangers.

Phobias have a tendency to manifest alongside other kinds of anxiety disorders. In fact, a phobia may find itself manifesting with other phobias as well. Treating these of course is not impossible with proper care.
Unfortunately, there’s yet to be a theory about the true origins and causes of phobias to a person. Likewise, “treating” a phobia really depends on the kind of phobia in question, the person’s lifestyle, and the willingness to help themselves.
