How classical music helps with stress

Posted on

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”- Plato

At Life Resolutions Huntingdale we know music’s ability to calm our minds is quite incredible. It’s sound has a deeply embedded, unique link to our emotions so it’s a fantastic way to manage stress.

Of all the sounds we can used to ease our stress, the most effective is classical. Its use has been found to have beneficial physiological effects too. It lowers our blood pressure, slows our heart rate, and decreases the amount of stress hormones that our brain’s release. What’s interesting is that during stressful periods where we need this calming influence the most, we tend not to bother, thinking that it’s a waste of precious time. But in a stressed state, the mind’s functioning is considerably less effective. Meaning it’s always worth taking a few minutes to indulge in the creations of musical geniuses like Beethoven, Debussy and Mozart or modern artists like Arvo Pärt,  Ros Bandt, or Riley Lee (playing the Shakuhachi).

Research studies showed:

  • Hospital patient’s levels of anxiety were shown to be significantly reduced after being given headphones and music
  • Patient’s suffering chronic pain post-surgery reported not noticing these sensations as much when listening to music
  • Music has been shown to relieve depression in the elderly
  • Significantly reduced emotional stress among cancer patients
