Loss and bereavement – How to cope with losing a loved one

The circle of life dictates that all things, good and bad, must come to an end. The same goes for people – our own mortality is inevitable and sooner or later, we must all leave this earth.

But coping with the loss of a loved one can be one of the hardest life challenges to face.

While loss is understood to be a part of life, the feeling of shock, grief and loss can be difficult to overcome. Whether it is expected or “comes out of the blue” can make a considerable difference. When a death comes about after an extended illness, can be a quite different experience to an unexpected or otherwise “early” passing.

Time, it is said, heals all wounds, but the process of grieving is an important one, helping the mind and heart to process the event and its outcome.

For many, dealing with loss and the grief that follows can be a challenging ordeal. It is not uncommon for the person to isolate themselves, shutting out those around them who want to help. Denial is another coping mechanism adopted by those unable to process or express their grief. It is important to remember that bereavement or grief is not an illness to be treated, but rather a state of mind, that, with the right counselling, can be overcome more readily.

There are a few things to keep in mind when tackling the emotions that come with losing a loved one. Everyone deals with death in a different way. Knowing and remembering this is important when you feel your reactions are unwarranted or unusual. Do not compare yourself to others in the same situation. Allow yourself to use your own devices to heal.

Remember also that you are allowed to feel vulnerable, and that grief and mourning are normal. Pretending it hasn’t happened or shutting out feelings of grief will only serve to compound the issue. Give yourself time to feel the pain.

It can be useful to open up to someone about what you are feeling, but only when you are ready.

Often times, solitude is the best way to process the range of emotions that occur after the death of someone close. But once you have allowed yourself time alone, remember that opening up and talking to someone about your emotions can go a long way in helping you begin the healing process.
