Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe and debilitating form of anxiety. It often strikes when an individual experiences a traumatic event. It does not mean that an individual is weak or incompetent.

It can occur after a serious accident, physical or sexual assault, war, or a natural disaster such as a bushfire or a flood- any situation wherein an individual fears for their or another’s safety and life. It can even occur from listening to someone else’s trauma (vicarious trauma)!

How Do I Know I Need Help?

Strong emotions such as fear and anger, sadness and despair, are natural responses in situations like these and will generally go away over time. However when these feelings are intensely distressing and persist for a month or more it is important to seek professional help. Get help if you are experiencing any or all of the following:

    • Flashbacks of the traumatic event – spontaneous triggers of memories of the event that feels like a re-living of it.
    • Physical symptoms such as sweating, heart palpitations and panic attacks
    • Feeling emotionally numb and avoiding situations that are reminders of the trauma
    • Feeling anxious and irritable for no apparent reason

PTSD is a severe and debilitating illness that can’t be left untreated.

At Life Resolutions Kingsford, our psychologists are experienced trauma specialists who will work with you to overcome the symptoms of PTSD and restore your quality of life and personal wellbeing.

We are also able to assess and report for medico legal purposes.

Medicare Rebates available

To access the Medicare Rebate, you need your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan before referring you to a psychologist.

You may be eligible to receive Medicare rebates immediately into your bank account when paying for your session by cash, credit card, EFTPOS or cheque at all Life Resolutions locations.
