A common conclusion is that if someone continuously exposes themselves to activities, objects, substances, or behaviour that makes them feel “high” or experience euphoria, then they may be in an addictive cycle.

Addictive behaviours can take a turn for the worse if they become manifestations of psychical addiction, as when a person has become dependent on the reactions they feel (the feeling of numbness or happiness, for instance) for exposing themselves to the addictive substance or action.

Spotting Addictive Behaviour

  • If the person becomes obsessed to the point of actively seeking the activity, object, or substance, even if it’s causing harm to themselves or to other people.

  • If the person hides the activity or object after close friends or family have mentioned their concerns, and even denies that they may have problems because of their dependence on a substance or activity.
