Counselling is the process of sitting and talking with a trained professional psychologist or counsellor to help you gain a clear perspective of thoughts, problems, and situations in your life. Counselling can help people to understand the problems they’re going through and how to deal with difficulties in a healthy and constructive way.
A psychologist or counsellor allows you to speak openly and freely about feelings and thoughts in a safe environment. Together you and your counsellor will come up with goals that will help you live a life that is more valued.

A Psychologist is a person who studies the science and research of human behaviour, human relationships and mental processes. It requires a minimum of 6 years training – 4 years university training and, either an internship, a Master’s Degree, or a combination of the two. Psychologists collaborate with psychiatrists and doctors when required and are trained in a number of psychological therapies.
For your first session, you don’t need to prepare for anything, unless you feel you need to. Psychologists generally work by talking through your concerns and problems with you. The first session will be telling your story to the psychologist about why you are there and what your difficulty is and what changes you would like in your life. If you don’t know the reason, they will help you to work it out through questions that may help.
The number of sessions required is dependent on the reason you’re seeking professional help, the depth of the problem, and how well you improve with professional help. Some people only require one or two sessions while others tend to need ongoing therapy. You and your psychologist can determine what will best meet your needs.
