Depression is a prevalent yet often misunderstood condition that can affect anyone at any time. It is important to recognise and understand the symptoms of depression, so it can be identified and treated early.
Many people with depression have become apt at hiding their emotions and feelings from the outside world. Although this may make others more comfortable, it is likely to lead to further turmoil and difficulties for the sufferer.
If you are aware of the less obvious signs and symptoms of depression, it can be easier to recognise if you or a loved one is suffering –
- Changes to appetite or weight – if you or your loved one is experiencing sudden changes to weight or is eating much more or less than usual, this could be a sign of depression.
- Changesin sleeping patterns – a regular sleep cycle is an important part of keeping healthy, and poor sleeping habits can be an indicator for declining mental health. If you or someone you care about is experiencing insomnia or sleeping much more than usual, this could mean they are struggling with depression.
- Avoiding social situations– If someone is experiencing depression, social situations can become stressful and no longer enjoyable. It is important to check in on your friend if they seem no longer interested in social activities they used to enjoy, or if they seem unusually withdrawn.
