Using a Buddhism meditative practice, Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn developed a technique designed to help those who were suffering. It’s called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). It has been used to ease symptoms of those suffering many chronic medical conditions, in particular pain syndromes. In developing this he discovered that we are ignoring our bodies. In this frantic modern age we are jumping from one responsibility to the next, filling our systems with anxiety and stress. These then have a negative effect on our physiological state. But when we practice mindfulness, we give our bodies the attention they need. During this time our emotional states achieve balance. His theory was that by being present in the moment with our bodies in a non-judgemental setting, our state of wholeness is corrected. That outcome he believed, is the goal that’s at the root of both meditation and medicine.
